When I first planned my lower garden 20 years ago, I was enthralled by antique roses and tried
to pick a rose from virtually every classification: Damask, Gallica, Moss, China, Noisette, Bourbon.
A living link to history. I “pruned with a shovel” varieties that were dogged by mildew or rust or
blackspot…even if they had lovely names like Variegata de Bologna, Charles de Mills. Some like
Comte de Chambord just up and died on me. I finally honed in on Bourbons…because they
had all the looks and heavenly scent of 18th century roses with the bred in ability to rebloom.
Above are a few favorite 19th century Bourbon roses from this morning: Icy pink Souvenir de
Malmaison, deep pink Deuil de Dr. Reynaud, and striped Honorine de Brabant.
More on white roses soon…
Trish, I have a girlfriend who is absolutely crazy obsessed with antique roses. I’m going to turn her on to your blog so she can learn from you. She refuses to prune, and she doesn’t cut her roses to enjoy inside to enjoy. Love the styling of this photo. I’m doing a style series, the 1st post was a couple of days ago about The Edited Wardrobe. Come see me when you have time.
Trish, this picture is beautiful, I’m sure your garden is a real show at the moment. Tomorrow I’m going with a good friend to check out the rose collection at our local Château de Miserey. We have a drought on here and all the blooms are at least 2 weeks early!
Wishing you a lovely rose -filled weekend

Stunning photo!!!! The antique roses are my favorite too. Did not know the bourbons rebloomed. Post more so I can order them all.
What a fabulous image! With lovely antique jewels to compliment your ‘ancient’ roses!
Can’t wait for your Peony-show! Will send some sunshine to CA, and, please, send the rain to us.
Everything is drying out….
Heartily greetings from the Périgord,
have a sunny rose weekend,
xxxkarin
What wonderful names. Reminds of names of the Paris metro stops like “Chateau Rouge” or “Chateau d”eau.” Thanks so much for making me smile. Best, Cynthia.
Beautiful photo,Trish with the mingling of vintage jewels and old roses, perfection! Yes, I am going to plant more roses, again, now that I have you as a mentor!! My old rose source here in Canada, has stopped shipping now till September, since they ship bare root, so I will put in the wish list at the end of the summer.
I have cleared a new bed for them. Looking forward to your white roses in bloom. Check out Pickering Nurseries Inc. just for fun.

Trish, this is such a beautiful photograph, I can almost smell the roses! I’m looking forward to your post on white roses, which are my all time favorite.
We in the Atlanta area are not having the best weather for roses. First too much rain, then too many cloudy days, now it’s too hot! My five…count ’em, five!….roses bushes have just stopped putting out buds. I’m watering like crazy but the roses are just putting out leaves, no flowers. Until they bounce back, I’ll just have to be content to reread all your lovely posts.

Love the white and blue china with the roses
Love the bourbon roses, so lush and full…what a beautiful bloom. I cannot wait to have a garden again….so miss going out and smelling and picking the fruits of my labor. Beautiful!
Trish,
This picture is BEAUTIFUL!
Sorry, hit enter too quickly…would you mind sharing with me what type of camera you use. I am in the market for a new one and your photos are always amazing!
Hi Michele. Of course: Canon Rebel T2i. It has features of higher grade Canon’s with light weight body. Noticed my hand got tired with sister’s heavier camera, so I liked that. Great in low light situations, and has movie mode. I’m always on automatic, basically.
Just found your blog and am now a convert. I just did a blog on blue&white so was excited to see the beautiful roses in a lovely blue&white jar. xxpeggybraswelldesign.com
Trish, You just have the best eye. Your vignette is gorgeous, as are your roses and gardens and everything you do. Happy Friday to you too!!!
The photograph is such a gift today!!! Thanks for sharing the beautiful Bourbon roses-such a lovely vignette!
Trish,
Do you have a recommended source for the bourbon roses? Are they pretty disease resistant? Love your flowers.
Karen
Loving your roses and have been a lot of reading the past few days about them. Now that I know English roses do well here time to try another type so bourbons it is, thanks Trish for telling us about them! Enjoy your weekend!
P.S. Mister man said he’ll make another pair of pedestels if you can wait until fall. Summer work now calls…..
Trish, I come to your blog for inspiration. My garden is one year new. I enjoyed researching roses and other things you post. I truly appreciate what you share. Regards!
