Beneath a pelmeted bower of rose garlands in
a French chateau, I could dream a Sunday morning away…
But here in Northern California, two days of sun are forecast…
and I must wrestle myself from imagining my rosy bed
and set about setting the garden straight …
My absolute favorite way to spend the day…
The espaliered apples and pears are beginning to bloom,
the cherries setting small buds along their branches.
Muscari runs in rampant drifts headlong into the
babytears and nepata. Self-seeded foxgloves
have made themselves at home artfully over the winter,
growing voluminous leafy skirts while it rained and rained.
This is what I wait for…from when the last plump
Bourbon rose is plucked, sometimes as late as December,
until the eternal rains finally start to abate. However briefly.
I have two days to step carefully into my damp garden,
stooping to pull and clear, everywhere looking
for signs of Spring…

Hi Trish!
Alas, my gardens are under 3 feet of snow! I will think of you today…puttering about in your special happy space and smile…knowing that you are doing what you love and that perhaps in another 6…8? weeks…we will have spring too!
Enjoy yourself! 🙂
thank you. . .that was lovely on a sunday morning. . .
I woke up with a similar thought this morning… I still need to prune my roses!
What beautiful imaginings and gorgeous images to match….xv
What a beautiful and uplifting post. Thank you for sharing xxx
What a beautiful post for a rainy sunday in Provence
Just found your blog…beautiful…can’t wait to look around!
AMEN!
Thanks for all your comments…sorry some of you are under snow drifts. Can’t believe the rain is back on Tuesday…until then making “hay while the sun shines”…
So jealous-after the most snow in history in DC we have snow and snow damage everywhere. I can’t wait to be in my garden gardening instead of removing three feet of heavy snow from my boxwoods, yews, camellias, azaleas, etc.
Love the lit a la polonaise. Your words are so inspiring of spring to come.
thank you for lovely post Trish- on this side of the globe we are allso waiting patiently for the weather to change- we are waiting for it to change to cooler temperatures as it is unbearable outside in the heat we are currently experiencing. At 9 o’clock in the morning, it is time to come inside for shelter, out of the blistering sun. it never seizes to amaze me how mankind is ready for a change in season- in all corners of the world…everything has a time and place….
Just what I needed to start my week! Lovely images as always! Thank you again for the award! A little shout-out for you on my blog… Happy Monday! ox Mon
Great post Monika and thank you.
Such splendid beauty. A harbinger for lovely days to come…we hope. Usually in the midwest there is this violent shift from snow to tornadoes. Usually right when the tall iris is about to pop and the peonies are quivering with stage fright, Mother Nature screams out in some way that gets attention that she is in charge of the drama. Hope big rains not coming your way from the earthquake mess.
Hi HBD. What our poor gardens have to fend off! I have cut Peonies when they are still in tight balls, and kept in a refrigerator successfully for several weeks in a bucket (trying to keep some until my birthday at the end of May). Tornadoes! I’m counting my blessings!
last week i was in northern california for a landscape symposium. extra days were stolen to wander, take photographs and soak in inspiration. love your part of the world and the flowers were a balm to this chicago girl.
just discovered your beautiful blog! will be adding to my blogroll immediately as i want to stay in touch.
