I love aqua…really I do…
but it showed up uninvited in my white crackle glaze subway tiles. You can see
the bottom tile (a square) is a good match for the tumbled white marble mosaic floor.
But the other tiles have the slightest tint of aqua. My husband came home late the day
they had done @ 25% of the bathtub wall and said adroitly “well, it’s blue”. I can’t tell you
how many times he repeated this mantra while I showed the box with “white” written on the
side, and used various forms of argument to convince him that they were supposed
to be white. Act 2, scene 1 …we removed all the tiles, scraped off the mortar, repaired to
the tile shop the next day to pick out classic (uncrackle glazed) white subway tile. I
might reuse the aqua tile in the master bath shower. I’m torn, because I’m really
into chalky “Astier de Villatte” white and gray….though still loving watery blends of
aqua and green….
Here are a couple Astier cups in the blue-green painted interior
of the kitchen cabinet. When I painted this interior several years
ago I layered and glazed several shades of blue and green to get
this muted cool tone….
Here is a crop of a Whistler painting with gorgeous aqua and green tones…

And a lovely 19th century Venetian slipper chair, complete with visage
at top and rococo flourished carvings on the silvery legs…
If it wasn’t for the hefty shipping charge
I would have bid on this…can you
just imagine it reupholstered in a rough
Belgian linen and placed alongside a white
bathtub to hold your favorite book?
Je regret….sigh…
The queen of pretty…Tricia Guild…
I have several of her books where she sashays
easily from neutral to feminine, soft brights…
I bought my daughter a pair of thigh high brown tweed socks with three
aqua fuzzy balls on each side…adorable and Anthropologie of course…
Would love to redo her bedroom with this fabric…charming!
Hmmm…the aqua is growing on me…

I love this color story! I am a little obsessed with watery blue greens! You did a great job on the kitchen cabinet interiors.

Hello Trish,
I’m the interior design who advised you regarding the Toto and Kohler WC’s. Aqua may well be my favorite color, but if the “budget” allows, I would suggest that you try to achieve your original goal of the “Astier de Villatte” gray and white, because unless you have a serious change of heart, every time that you walk into your bathroom, you will wonder, “what if.” This is probably a lifetime bathroom- a big investment of time, energy, and resources. Colors are very interesting and no matter what a product is called, one should take a sample from the same production group that you will be purchasing and all other products to be used in the same room, put all the items in that room, look at them together in light that will be used in that room (or something close), and at a variety of times of the day and night. Amazing how those colors will change. Live with them for a few days, if possible. The very best of luck to you.
Thank you, Denise. Great advice….you really illustrate, as well, how having professional help can really save one money. I’m lucky enough to have a sister and mother with “a great eye”…but I was in too much of a hurry to pass this by them. Measure twice, cut once…marry in haste, repent at leisure…and so on.
I am so glad you brought this up. A couple years ago I was delivered a truckload of pale celadon tile by mistake, by Materials Marketing in Austin. We discovered it before it went on the walls, so we could send it back. Mandy at materials marketing would not return my calls for at least two weeks, and it took weeks to get them to remove the errant tile from my porch. I have lately added two thousand square feet to my house, built in 1940, and and used Ann Sacks in Dallas, where I had no trouble.
I am leaning towards taking a loss on the used tile and getting a credit on the 75% unused. As Denise suggested, should have laid out a box of the tile in the bathroom and really studied it before having it installed.
It’s too late now but I think you can get crackle in white from walker zanger. This is definitelty green!
Ah, the bathroom chronicles. I have had the electrician from hell. Hope to have new one by Monday. Just found out tile for floor is backordered and that the venting solution may require my redoing the ceiling of my husband’s bath which I painted, glazed and vanished 15 years ago. (Still looks great, but how will I ever match what I did all over the room/ceiling?) Makes me long for a hot soak. But Wait! I no longer have one. I knowingly am giving up my tub but the gutted space waiting for return of carpenter to rip out old floor and install new subfloor is depressing.
Hope all is working out for you, both colors of tile were beautiful, but I know what you mean about the unexpected. By the way do you think I should have fired the electrician right after he (first order of day) took out light bulb in bath fan/light, sat the bulb on top his ladder then sat his butt down on his ladder and bulb? Did I fail to heed the obvious?
Yes and yes. Well, had a plumber show up on Monday that wanted to rip into the kitchen ceiling…sent him in search of a clog to warrant his one hour minimum, and called plumber number two that was able to get the job done without ripping into the ceiling. I have one more day of this hell…and then jury duty on Friday. I am going mad.
Hi Trish!
This is a stickey wicket. Sometime in design land things happen that make you either rethink your first choice or MAKE it work or stick definitely to the original plan. You and I both know in this business that some of the biggest mistakes sometimes turn in to the most. beautiful results. The Astier colors are classy and elegantly French It is harder because it is your bathroom. Hang in there sister you will make the right choice and it will be gorgeous!

I ‘ve already made a room with this aqua silk from Designers Guild , it looks fabulous !!!
I’m sure you will make the right choice
Ooooh j’adore those last two photos… must visit Tricia! That last photo looks like something I would paint… sooo glad I stopped by your site!
Hi Trish,
Interesting how whites can look so different, in another light, I have noticed this too.
Lovely post and the silks and fabrics from the Designers Guild are fabulous.
Don’t you just hate tradesmen in your house and glad when they finish and leave.
Hugs
Carolyn

I feel your pain, but I think you were right to take it down and start over. When you have a clear vision of what you want, then you are never wrong to follow it. Hope you have a wonderful weekend. ~jermaine~
I love these shades! Beautiful images!
