More Provençal Views

Provence living room

Another one of my very favorite images…I was surprised to realize that

its from the same home as the lit à la polonaise in the previous post…

but from a different source…

sofa detail

Love the fawn tones of the linen…

the heavy simplicity of fabric and form…

Provence living room with interesting ceiling

Furniture in the room a blend of Italian and Provençal furniture from 18th and

19th century. Notice the distinctive architectural elements:  baroque styled

doorway and bookcase, the unique plaster arched ceiling supported by beams.

The doorway feature was modeled after the 18th century Venetian bookcase…

providing a lovely symmetry, height and color to either side of the fireplace…

garden elements

More garden elements inside add to the informal ease of the space…

Antique Biot pot… originally used to store olive oil…here…a pair of

glass cloches on twin tables behind couch…Venetian gondolier lantern…

The shutters…the lovely volume of the

room carefully anointed with finds…

religious icon and flea treasures

Parisian antique dealer Dominique Bénaed-Dépalle’s shop

Vivement Jeudi provided much of the furniture and objects….

18th century Provence farmhouse

Neutrals and tone on tone lifted

with trace of color and gilding…

Louis XV stone fireplace…

Antique Italian fauteuils in vintage damask…

Distinctive molding in Provence farmhouse

Love the mix of gilded and patina laden baroque

with vintage metal tubs (like in this post here)

18th century painted secretary…

View towards the dining room …

Italian chairs around simple wood table…

Italian gilt wood and metal chandelier…

cheesecloth looped from the beamed ceiling…

A Dash through the British Museum

January 21, 2010

Horse head from the Parthenon…

More armchair traveling…as the travel photos are slowly unloaded.

With less than a day in London before meeting her friend in Cambridge,

my daughter Austin made sure she visited the British Museum

Stone frieze of youths on horseback

from the Parthenon

Pharaoh…

Gorgeous subject…highlighted by incredible ceilings and lighting

Backview…

Statue flanked by Egyptian columns…

seen through a continuum of Greek columns

Marble Roman sarcophagus

Centuries of patina…

Roman stucco panels that decorated

Two tombs of merchants at Pozzuoli

Greek headdress

Roman mosaics from Carthage

La Ronda News

January 6, 2010

Olde Good Things, an architectural salvage company based in Pennsylvania and

Los Angeles, is selling salvaged architectural elements from the recently razed

1929  Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania estate “La Ronda”. The Spanish Gothic Mansion was

“the last commissioned Addison Mizner work north of the Mason-Dixon line.”

I first heard the sad story of La Ronda from All the Best‘s Ronda Carmen here.

Sadly, no one was able to halt the destruction of this historic mansion.

Just received news of the sale through their newsletter.

These salvaged cast stone gnomes were part of the

frieze detailing above

Glorious cast stone Moorish style arches

buttressing stained glass windows…

Incredible vaulted ceiling and resplendent colonnade

of intricately cast stone window arches, stair rail, overdoor…

Detail of cast stone arch…

I’ve seen salvaged stone arches set into

a garden wall as a dramatic portal…

Stunning and unforgettable….

Coffered ceiling: 36 sections in very good condition as well as much

of the crown molding and molding that went between the sections.

This link here shows the process of removal of one of the arches.

Grateful for the efforts to salvage the architectural treasures, but

clearly a bittersweet, second best outcome…

Artefact Design & Salvage

Artefact Design & Salvage

This is just the sort of place that thrills me to walk into. After a wonderful drive with

vineyards and the occasional winery splayed on either side of the road, you take a right turn

just before the turnoff for downtown Sonoma or further Napa, into Cornerstone Gardens.

There are several shops and a great place for coffee or lunch with gravel underfoot,

corrugated metal buildings and factory lights, olive trees and rugged perennials…

it’s how Sonoma does country.

Trouvais 0001DSCN9907

Artefact Salvage is a place that has a point of view,

an aggregate of various artists, countries, materials, sizes, centuries…

Huge suspended grinding wheels alongside a mythical beaux-arts panel

Trouvais 0001DSCN9905

Marble, femininely French…

Trouvais 0001DSCN9913

Baby heads and NAP…of course they’d go together…

Trouvais 0001DSCN9915

American tableau…

Colonel Sanders and rusty iron wheels and weather vane…

Trouvais 0001DSCN9930

The namesake pediment back lit by mid morning sun…

Huge tin wrapped tabletops with massive carved cast stone legs

are laden with curiosities, cast iron rosettes and lion heads,

bowls of slag glass rock, succulent candles, tamarind bowls,

river rock votive holders and soap dishes, and a good selection of books.

Trouvais 0001DSCN9903

Myriad of interesting small items…

like these sliced Nautilus shell sections

Trouvais 0001DSCN9936

Closer look at those enormous tables and the view through the huge building’s belly…

industrial lights, driftwood, a Gazebo/Pavilion from Northern India complete with roof

(not shown). Crusty original paint in beautiful pastel colors. Early to mid 19th century.

Trouvais 0001DSCN9941

Outdoors there are stone fireplaces, statues,

scrapes of architectural salvage…

Trouvais 0001DSCN9939

Fragments from an old Philadelphia building that was  torn down

Trouvais 0001DSCN9923

One of many stately fountains…

Trouvais 0001DSCN9917

Pretty aqua colored, slightly less industrial cart

Trouvais 0001DSCN9927

Solemnly sentinel greyhounds grouped outside in the entrance courtyard

Huge (60″ diameter) teak scrap spheres and fountain in background.

Click Artefact Design Interview for the store’s fascinating history, with owner Dave Allen.

(click on TV screen to view) You might notice they visit an Erin Martin designed property

in St. Helena that I posted about here (look for the gilded Italian lamp and window pelmets)

to show places where the architectural salvage was used.
