antique roses, Bourbon roses, Garden, roses

Garden roses inside

When I first planned my lower garden 20 years ago, I was enthralled by antique roses and tried

to pick a rose from virtually every classification: Damask, Gallica, Moss, China, Noisette, Bourbon.

A living link to history. I “pruned with a shovel” varieties that were dogged by mildew or rust or

blackspot…even if they had lovely names like Variegata de Bologna, Charles de Mills. Some like

Comte de Chambord just up and died on me. I finally honed in on Bourbons…because they

had all the looks and heavenly scent of 18th century roses with the bred in ability to rebloom.

Above are a few favorite 19th century Bourbon roses from this morning: Icy pink Souvenir de

Malmaison, deep pink Deuil de Dr. Reynaud, and striped Honorine de Brabant.

More on white roses soon…

Big rains out here in Northern California earlier this week…

Foxgloves bent and roses cowed, heavy with rainfall,

wet ground strewn with fallen petals. Peony buds are poised for

the big show by end of week. Bundles of  fresh picked roses

make up for all the clean up work I’ll be doing today!

Giving me a rosy outlook…

Antique French linen, Bella Notte, Fabric dyeing, grays, monogrammed linens

antique linen

An update on earlier post on fabric dyeing….a Bella Notte Whisper

coverlet that I moved from warm tones to a cool neutral…

New piece of antique French linen from La Maison Violette

mouse brown

Eek…love the “mouse-y” tones of this slipper chair

at Jayson Home & Garden here

Pretty much my favorite catalog…

Farrow and Ball’s Mouse’s Back here

for color inspiration…

French settee

Again…that sort of gray…sort of brown…sable…mink…

I love this color…perfect boost of dark moodiness…

In the midst of my “dye wars” I was successful in turning a Bella Notte

silk velvet duvet from a greenish light taupe into this rich tone…

luxury bedding

These are the dyes I use here. Certainly not easy trying to get

just the right tone…but…extremely gratifying when it works!

Always filter the dye before adding to the dye bath…I use coffee filters..

If you are lucky enough to get to Brimfield here…

Say hi to Wendy Lewis of the Textile Trunk for me. Her dyed linens here
