Whilst my days are spent in the doldrums of excavating a 1939
bathroom (with a dash of 1960′s Formica thrown in),
my daughter has danced about more illustrious
antiquities. In previous trips to Italy she picked up
my fascination with doorways….
and captured some incredible portals last week in Provence

From the relatively “contemporary” historical architecture…

Another doorway…
a bit of snow drifted gothic froth

To the truly ancient…
The immense stone portals that ring
the Amphitheatre in Arles…

How incredible to see the extent of Roman ruins so deep into France…
She spent a summer in Rome before starting college
excavating at Villa delle Vignacci…
The Villa delle Vignacce complex, built in the second century AD, was the property of Quintus Servilius Pudens, a friend of the Roman emperor Hadrian. The villa is located in a park famed for the well-preserved aqueduct channels that stretch for miles along the Via Appia Antica and was first explored by archaeologists in 1780.

But if you’ve ever visited Rome in the summer…
you can imagine what it must be like to walk amongst
all this antiquity on a cold wintery day in Provence

Great stone boulders celebrating fertile fields and stream….
Leaves, berries…les poissons?

A story behind every piece…
(knowing my daughter….a long one)

How do these people scurry about their daily lives with
this sort of sublime rubble underfoot?!

Time marches on….

Sigh…is it possible to take a bad picture anywhere in Provence?
Beautiful pictures. Keep ‘em coming.
I just got to live out part of my lifelong dream to see and visit Paris and Rome! With my lack of health and wealth that dream will probably never be realized. Thank you for letting me live vicariously through your daughter.
love to you and your’s,
nancy
Oh goodie! More pictures from your daughter’s travels. She has captured Provence beautifully. I especially love that last photo looking down on the snow covered street in Arles. I would love to hear all the stories behind each picture. Seeing these pics has actually made me begin plans for a return trip this year. Talking about it right now! –Delores
Fabulous photographs! It surely makes me long to go back to both countries! She has an artistic eye like her mother!
Oh what lovely photos in Provence – your daughter has captured the incredible atmosphere. Tell her merci!

No, I don’t believe it IS possible to take a bad photo in Provence——it is ALL so beautiful!
Thank you for the transport on this dreary day in the U.S. midwest.

I have often thought of designing a sweater around the theme of anitiquities in Alres…please keep the shots coming, I am getting lots of inspiration…. what could possibly work for wool…greys and slate blues with some texture, knit columns, rosetees, arches////
Oh, what beautiful pictures! I am in awe of your daughter – what a special woman she must be!!
